Queen Latifah took part in the Michael Jackson memorial services but she was still like most of the world, she never personally met him. Wednesday Latifah told David Letterman that she never actually met the late Michael Jackson, whose tribute ceremony she took part in the prior day. Latifah, 39, said the memorial was “sad” and “poignant” She added that, while she never met the late song and dance man, she heard through musical colleagues that he thought she had beautiful cheekbones, which she said flattered her immensely.

In the new July issue of Essence magazine, Queen Latifah opens up about sexual abuse in her childhood that she never discussed publicly before. Latifah reveals that she was violated by a teenage babysitter, saying, “He violated me. I never told anybody. I just buried it as deeply as I could and kept people at an arms length. I never really let a person get too close to me.” She also admits that, because of the abuse, she’s since struggled with commitment. “I could have been married years ago, but I had a commitment issue.”

Queen Latifah considered naming her new hip-hop album The L Word “just to mess with people’s heads.” She constantly has to deal with rumors and speculation that she’s a lesbian. Latifah doesn’t discuss her personal life and played a lesbian in the 1996 film Set It Off. “L was gonna stand for love though or La,” she laughs. “Since people want to play games, I like to jab back sometimes just for fun, but I’m like, ‘Nah, that’s too much energy wasted.’ (more…)
