Fantasia Security on High Alert: After She Received Hate Mail

Fantasia Barrino is under a self-imposed lockdown — after she received a threatening letter. It all started last night at the Pantages Theater in L.A. — Fantasia was reading her fan mail after a performance of “The Color Purple.”

Fantasia’s manager says Barrino became alarmed over a disturbing letter loaded with racial slurs — including the n-word — and a line that read, “go back where you came from and die.” The person who wrote the letter claims he used to work as a security guard for Fox while Fantasia was on “A.I.”

Fantasia immediately contacted theater security — which then contacted the LAPD.

In the meantime, the theater has “beefed up” security around Fantasia — and all over the venue — and will be screening anything sent to Barrino’s dressing room before it gets to her.

Fantasia told TMZ, “I will not be defeated by one isolated person’s hatred.”

Fantasia had two tumors on her vocal cords in 2008 which is part of the reason, according to her, that she missed her performances in The Color Purple. The story was a good gossip topic so Fantasia feels her truth, was never told. She also feels that her truth in regards to her illiteracy was blown out of context. So these are some of the reasons that she has the reality show, not to mention the check!

Fantasia Barrino performed at the Barbados Music Awards on January 10 and also took home the International Award of Excellence at the show.

Performers always get caught in unflattering performance pictures but the one thing you know about Fantasia was that she gave it her all. In other Fantasia news, her show Fantasia For Real was a huge hit with 2.3 million viewers.

I like Fantasia she reminds me of a young Patti Labelle. I also think she sets herself up for a lot of the criticism she receives. I respect the fact that she takes care of her family but if she wants to survive, Fantasia has to let her family earn their keep and live their own lives—and not through her. Teeny needs to grow up and stop trying to emotionally blackmail Fantasia.

Fantasia Barrino has her own reality show that will debut on Jan. 11, 2010 at 10PM on VH1. The show will follow Fantasia as she records her new album and juggles motherhood.

“Fantasia has engaged millions of fans not only through her music and her amazing talent but also by her incredible fairytale life story,” said Jeff Olde, Executive Vice President, Original Programming & Production, VH1. “Our audience helped Fantasia become an ‘American Idol’ and now, with this series, they get a backstage pass into her real life as she confronts obstacles to realize her true potential as an artist, a mother, a daughter and a sister.”

Looks like it might not be a good idea for Fantasia, the star of “The Color Purple,” to get sick and take the day off. At least while the production is playing Chicago. According to ABC7 Television, the show went on without the star at the Arie Crown Theatre both Saturday afternoon and evening. Theater officials say Fantasia took ill just before the matinee production. Her understudy filled in, but that didn’t go over too well with some patrons who let their feelings be known.

“We want our money back!” several of the ticketholders chanted outside of the theater.

According to ABC7, all the afternoon theatergoers saw was red after learning they would not receive refunds for tickets purchased to see Fantasia star in the Chicago production of the hit musical. Saturday night, however, an offer was on the table to refund money.

“I was excited to see her, but now, I’m disappointed. I think she could have been more professional and tried, at least, to perform,” said ticketholder Roscoe Mohead of Gurnee Saturday afternoon.

“I voted for her a hundred thousand times for her to win that. I mean, I’m just very moved by her, and I’m very disappointed. And I just think the theater, Oprah, or somebody should just give us our money back,” said fan Charlotte Czarnecki of Wheaton.

The ticketholders said they were in their seats when they were informed that an understudy, not the American Idol alum, would star in Saturday’s performance.

The show’s management says Fantasia became ill after eating a turkey sandwich and could not appear in the production, which was made famous by Oprah Winfrey’s movie role.

“Fantasia’s equally upset because she’s very committed and compassionate about delivering for her fans. We don’t take anyone for granted. We understand there were about 300 to 400 individuals who were quite upset and asked for refunds,” manager Brian Dickens said. “The company is trying to work it out, whether they get a refund or they come back for tomorrow’s show.”

The disappointed crowd became irate after theater officials told them there would be no refunds, only exchanges for tickets to tonight’s show, which some said was already sold out.

“[I bought] an $85 ticket, and they want to give me a balcony ticket? I don’t think so. That’s just not right. And I’m on a fixed income. Why should I have to pay? Fantasia’s already been paid,” said Homewood’s Paulette Foster.

“If Oprah can shut down Michigan Avenue, then why can’t we get a refund?” said Letitia Brevard of Evergreen Park.

Management officials for Fantasia said she was taken to a Chicago area hospital where doctors diagnosed her with food poisoning and dehydration.

We understand that Fantasia returned Sunday and a national press spokesperson for “The Color Purple” says that affected ticketholders from Saturday were allowed to exchange the tickets for Sunday’s show, or they’ll be able to seek a refund from where they purchased the tickets. source

Former “American Idol” star Fantasia Barrino will return to reality television in a new unscripted series on VH1. The nine-time Grammy nominee has received a series commitment from the network for a new show that will premiere in early 2010.
“Fantasia has one of the most fascinating stories in show business, from her tough upbringing to her meteoric rise on the national scene thanks to ‘American Idol,’ ” said Jeff Olde, executive vp original programming at VH1. “Her challenges from fame and her unwillingness to fail have combined to create a larger-than-life talent who appeals to music lovers around the world. So many people wanted to work with her on this, but Fantasia is now part of the VH1 family, and we’re so happy to have her.”

VH1’s very on-brand project will chronicle Fantasia’s life as a recording artist and young single mother. The series is executive produced by Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato and Tom Campbell for World of Wonder, with Jill Holmes, Kristen Kelly and Olde producing for the network.

“Fantasia’s life has been an open book, but at 24 years old, her story has just begun,” Barbato said. “We look forward to smashing expectations and revealing the fresh, funny and unexpected side of this one-of-a-kind country girl and superstar.”

It had been widely reported that Fantasia’s North Carolina home was up for foreclosure and would be auctioned off yesterday (Monday). That didn’t happen, at the last minute some arrangements and payments were made that kept the home out of foreclosure. Good one for Fantasia.
