Jayson Williams Ordered to Pay Ex-Wife 200 G’s
Former Nets star Jayson Williams cried in the courtroom and insisted he was broke Wednesday before he was ordered to pay his estranged wife the $200,000 he owed her. The boo-hooing basketballer, who made $87 million playing for the Nets, insisted he used the last of his money to pay the mortgages on his three homes in South Carolina.
“I don’t think I had $150,000, but it is gone,” Williams said on the stand during a Manhattan Supreme Court hearing.
Williams also claimed he had to borrow dough to pay for private-school tuition for Tryumph and Whizdom – his two kids with his soon-to-be ex-wife, Tanya Young Williams.
Justice Laura Drager was not moved by Williams’ words or by his tears.
She ordered him to sell the houses as well as his interest in a professional lacrosse team – or else.
“She was asking me to incarcerate her husband,” Drager told Williams’ lawyer. Williams’ wife lives in Manhattan with the kids. She filed for divorce in February. The former St. John’s University star, who lives in South Carolina, was ordered in July to pay his wife $20,000 a month in maintenance and child support – backdated to March – while they work out a divorce agreement.
When Williams didn’t come up with the cash, Drager ordered the 6-foot-10 ex-NBA player back to court.
“Until we brought this motion for contempt, he wouldn’t have done the minimum and paid the children’s tuition,” said Tanya’s lawyer, Malcolm Taub.
Williams’ life began spiraling out of control in 2002 when he was charged with fatally shooting a limo driver at the player’s sprawling New Jersey mansion.
A jury convicted Williams of covering up the crime, but deadlocked on the reckless manslaughter charge.
Distraught over his divorce and his impending retrial, Williams went into a suicidal rage at a Manhattan hotel in April and had to be Tasered.
